I’ve been a product designer for over twenty years. In that time I’ve watched UX go from “nice to have” to boardroom priority to buzzword to something teams claim to do without actually doing it. Good UX isn’t a single activity. It’s a system of practices, measurements, and workflows that keep the user at the center while shipping product on time. What’s changed in UX since 2024?

Keep primary navigation consistent on every page. Limit top-level items to seven or fewer. Use descriptive labels, not clever ones. “Pricing” beats “Investment Options” every time. Make the current page obvious with active states and breadcrumbs for deep hierarchies.
Accessibility: WCAG 2.1 AA as baseline
The World Health Organization reports that 16% of the global population lives with some form of disability. That’s over 1.3 billion people. Accessibility isn’t charity. It’s a market you’re ignoring if you skip it.
WCAG 2.1 AA is your minimum. That means 4.5:1 contrast for normal text, full keyboard navigation, semantic HTML, visible focus indicators, and alt text on images. Automated tools catch only about 30% of issues, so test with actual screen readers too.
I’ve worked on projects where accessibility was a final-sprint checkbox. The rework cost was always higher than building it in from day one.

Mobile: touch-first, not desktop-shrunk

How do you measure UX success?

Task success rate

Time on task and error rate
Speed without accuracy means nothing. A user who finishes in 30 seconds with zero errors has a completely different experience from one who takes four minutes and makes three mistakes. Track both together to find where your interface creates confusion.
Net Promoter Score and CSAT
NPS measures whether users would recommend your product. CSAT measures satisfaction at specific touchpoints. Deploy NPS quarterly for overall health. Deploy CSAT after key interactions: onboarding, purchases, support calls. Track trends. Don’t obsess over individual scores.
Conversion rate
This is where UX connects to money. Companies investing in UX optimization see 12-25% conversion increases (Forrester). Segment by device and traffic source. Mobile and desktop conversion rates often tell completely different stories. A/B test rigorously so you can attribute lifts to specific changes.
Engagement and retention
Engagement measures depth: feature adoption, session frequency, content interaction. Retention measures whether people come back. DAU/MAU ratio reveals habitual usage. Cohort curves separate products that retain from those that leak users.
Here’s my honest take: most teams over-index on NPS. It’s easy to collect, easy to report, and almost impossible to act on. A score of 42 vs 38 tells you nothing about what to fix. I’d rather have detailed task success data on my three most important flows than a quarterly NPS number. This isn’t theory. I’ve seen this model cut rework by half on teams that previously spent entire sprints rebuilding features that missed the mark. When you validate before you build, you waste less.
Design in sprint ceremonies
Designers belong in sprint planning, standups, and reviews. In planning, they present upcoming discovery work and clarify specs. In standups, they flag blockers and answer questions. In reviews, they evaluate shipped work against the original intent.
The worst anti-pattern? Designers who skip standups because they think they’re “engineering meetings.” If you’re not in the room, you can’t course-correct before problems compound.
Shared artifacts and pairing
